Beautiful Person: The centerpiece of this advertisement is the beautiful woman taking a cigarette out of a pack from the brand that's being advertise. The ad implies that since beautiful people smoke this brand, you'll be beautiful if you smoke it too. Celebrity: The person in the photo also happens to be a celebrity, Barbara Stanwyck, an actress. It adds a sense of exclusivity, as it implies that since celebrities smoke this brand, you'll be as cool as these famous people by smoking it. Appeal to Authority: The ad states in nice big letters that "I&M FILTERS ARE JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED". This appeals to authority, as it implies that they're healthier than other brands, according to this person's doctor. Hyperbole: There are a few instances of hyperbole in this ad. The main one being the "THIS IS IT!" in big yellow letters popping out at the top. There's also the "NOW KING SIZE OR REGULAR" in an arrow pointing to the pack of cigarettes. These are used to hype up the product as being the best and how there are new varieties available.
Generally speaking, most commercials don't have all that much substance, and they're mainly just trying to embed the product being sold in your brain. However, during holiday season, companies try extra hard in making really good and effective advertisements. These are generally a lot longer, being minutes, and are of very high quality. One example is Salisbury's "The Big Night" ad, which I analyze here.
Final Project (1st Semester)
Over winter break, my parents and I traveled to Indonesia to visit family. During that trip, I was tasked with observing the advertising culture over there and contrast it to the advertising culture here in the US. You can find my project here.
